Goulburn’s iconic Lilac City Cinema hits the market with redevelopment potential
This property in central Goulburn has all the hallmarks of a blockbuster – your own cinema and everything that goes with it: popcorn, choc-tops and slushies.
Lilac City Cinema sits on a site of nearly 2700 square metres, and offers four screens and seats nearly 600 people.
The story began in 1959 with the opening of the Lilac Time Hall, regarded as a unique example of mid-century modernist architecture due to its giant angled columns.
For decades, the hall served as the cultural hub of this NSW Southern Tablelands town, but rising costs led to its repurposing as a cinema complex in 1994 before it passed into private ownership in the early 2000s.
Andrew Graham of Ashham Agencies says it represents an excellent walk-in, walk-out opportunity for a buyer.

“They could either continue the cinema operation or consider the potential to redevelop part or all of the site to a new vision [subject to council approval],” he says. “An E2 zoning allows for a really wide range of land uses – from backpacker accommodation to indoor recreation facilities, and plenty in between.”
The existing buildings cover nearly 1500 square metres, including a later-installed cinema that could be split off for alternative use. There are 26 at-grade car spaces.
“There are plenty of opportunities to explore with this asset,” Graham says.
