Historic Mount Victoria Manor hotel on the market

A grand estate in the Blue Mountains originally built for John Fairfax, one of the first proprietors of The Sydney Morning Herald, has hit the market with price expectations of more than $2.4 million.

Mount Victoria Manor was remodelled as a hotel soon after it was built as a grand mansion for Fairfax in 1876, but since then has kept its Victorian Italianate grandeur, from an era when rich and famous Sydneysiders would escape to mountains.

Current owners Denise and her partner Garry purchased the property in 2015 for $1.1 million and are now looking to sell it as they want to move into other business opportunities.

While the property would suit an owner-operator running the hotel, the couple said they would also consider offering a leasehold for the hotel business only.

The historic property was built by Manly-based architect Alexander Dean for Fairfax, who died a year after it was completed.

It was then sold to G. H. Cooper and run as a hotel, and passed down through generations of the Cooper family who were prominent local business people.

The manor had other lives as a school very briefly and was owned by a religious organisation called the Logos Foundation, who reportedly ran it as a Bible college from the 1960s through to the 1980s.

Selling agent Kristie Trouchet-Nilsson, of Hartley Real Estate, said that as well as its rich history, the spaciousness of the property was a big drawcard for buyers.

The hotel has 10 rooms with en suites, as well as four family rooms with en suites, a two-bedroom apartment and a four-bedroom apartment.

A restaurant seats more than 80 people and comes with a fully functioning kitchen and licensed bar.

Located in Mount Victoria, a popular spot for tourists, the manor is listed on the NSW state heritage register and its sprawling grounds cover almost 8000 square metres, including a croquet lawn, orchard and groves of deciduous trees.

“It’s a beautiful function space which has already had bookings for weddings but could be promoted more, so the current owners would anticipate a young couple coming in, running it themselves and living on site,” Ms Trouchet-Nilsson said.

“It’s got the accommodation so guests can book the whole place and set up beautiful marquees and really utilise the grounds.

“It’s right near the train station but it’s also a bit off the highway so guests … are offered privacy.”

There was also a development application for townhouses to be built on a portion of the block, Ms Trouchet-Nilsson said.
