Former post office buildings on the market right now

Known for their grand architecture, high ceilings and central locations, former post offices are emerging as the stars of the commercial property market.

Across Australia, they’ve been transformed into hotels, such as the Fullerton Hotel in the former Sydney GPO, as well as restaurants, cafes, and bars – taking advantage of the large, open lobbies. Others have evolved into retail stores and serve as cultural and community hubs.

It’s not often they appear on the market. When they do, they’re snapped up quickly.

Here are three that are currently on the market.

Collie, Western Australia

Built in the early 1960s, the old Collie Post Office is up for sale.

Located south of Perth, the property is well-maintained and offers four spacious offices, a reception area, conference room, an extra-large lunchroom and a generously sized customer service area.

“It has a net lettable area of approximately 163 square metres and is leased to a long term Government Department with Secure Lease For 1 Year Plus Options of 24 months from 30 June 2026 and paying 100% of all Outgoings,” the listing says.

Elders Real Estate South West is marketing the property, which is currently for sale at $399,000.

Brisbane City, Queensland

Brisbane’s heritage-listed General Post Office is on the market – the first time since it was purpose-built for the colonial Australian Postal Corporation in 1872.

While ownership would remain with the modern-day Australia Post, the government-owned corporation will seek expressions of interest for a 99-year lease for the landmark Queen Street building.

“The Brisbane GPO is a landmark building, however, the post office only occupies a very small part of the full site,” Australia Post chief financial officer Michael Bradburn said.

“This long-term leasehold offers an ideal opportunity to revitalise an iconic Brisbane landmark and create a thriving precinct ahead of the 2032 Olympic Games.”

The property at 136-140 Margaret Street currently hosts a cafe and 11 professional-service tenancies, including the long-term anchor tenant Murdoch Lawyers, which has called the building home since 2022.

The two-level icon, which ceased postal operations in 1999, has more than 1650 square metres of lettable space on a 2858-square-metre site and is of state significance, listed on the Queensland Heritage Register.
