Poyntons Nursery sale marks end of an era
The nursery has been a beacon of community spirit in the area for decades.

Iconic riverside nursery sold for first time in 90 years

Poyntons Nursery in Essendon in north-west Melbourne has sold for the first time in nearly a century, marking the end of an era for the Poynton family and the beginning of a new chapter for the land on which it has operated.

The site spans multiple titles, including 8 Morgan Street, Poyntons Cafe, an interior homewares and outdoor living store, along with an established nursery with display gardens. It is zoned General Residential (GRZ) under the Moonee Valley Planning Scheme.

The nursery was founded by William (Bill) Poynton 90 years ago.

Selling agent Stephen Bolton, director of retail investments at Savills Australia, said he anticipated the site would be redeveloped into housing or potentially retirement living.

Interest in the property was strong, with buyers taking note of its size, location, and established reputation.

“As you would expect for a property of this significance, we had very strong interest throughout the campaign with close to 200 enquiries and over 10 expressions of interest received,” said Bolton.

Stephen Bolton worked alongside James Latos, Anthony Carbone and Peter Daris of CPN Commercial Group to sell this rare slice of property.

The site spans four street frontages in the heart of Essendon.

Occupying a 4894-square-metre landholding, the nursery is nestled in a unique position with more than 90 metres of Maribyrnong River frontage and four street frontages. This results in top visibility for passers-by and an idyllic setting that many shoppers enjoy spending time in.

The location not only boasts panoramic river views and direct access to parklands and trails, but is also close to leading schools, hospitals, and retail hubs, including Highpoint and Moonee Ponds Central.

There is also direct river frontage which is a highly desirable asset within the area.

Established in the 1930s by William (Bill) Poynton, Poyntons Nursery has become a beacon within the inner-north-west community, attracting generations of green thumbs and visitors from across neighbouring suburbs. The property was sold by Yvonne Poynton, who is the last of the Poyntons to keep the family business alive.

“The nursery has always been about connection to nature, to people, and to this beautiful riverside community. It’s now time for someone new to imagine what comes next,” said Latos.
