Few buildings have witnessed the rate of change across Australia like the country’s original post offices.

They have connected communities for centuries, and while the experience inside may have moved from telegrams to the internet, the historic buildings themselves are a testament to a bygone era.

Now one such building – Parramatta’s first official post office – is available for lease for the first time in more than 20 years.

The sandstone building was built between 1878 and 1880.

Designed by the prominent Colonial Architect James Barnet, the two-storey sandstone building was constructed at 211-213 Church Street between 1878 and 1880.

During its time, it has borne witness to an immense amount of change, from the introduction of the motor car to the advent of the telephone and then the internet.

The post office occupies a coveted corner block in the Parramatta CBD.

While it served as the city’s main post office until 1966, it has since been used as an exhibition space and a campus and community hub for the University of New England.

“This building has always reflected the evolution of Parramatta, from its early days as a regional centre for mail delivery, through to its current position as a key part of Greater Sydney’s economic and cultural life,” says Robert Napoli, senior leasing executive at Ray White Commercial Western Sydney.

“It’s rare to see this kind of historical continuity in a commercial space.”

The internal layout lends itself to multiple uses.

Napoli says the building consists of 450 square metres of space across two levels and occupies an enviable position on Church St in the heart of the Parramatta CBD. It is directly opposite the planned Metro station and just 400 metres from Parramatta train station.

“This is a building that naturally lends itself to a wide variety of uses, whether that’s a flagship retail store, boutique office, or hospitality venue,” says Joseph Assaf, director at Ray White Commercial Western Sydney.

“There’s a lot of flexibility here, and the historical significance adds a layer of identity that many businesses look for.

“For the right tenant, this could be a long-term address that connects their brand with the story of Parramatta itself,”

The property is available for lease in November.
