Ninth Island in Tassie awaits its next chapter
Ninth Island is one of the only freehold islands in Tasmania.

Tasmanian island for sale with bright future for reinvention

A rare freehold island off Tasmania’s north coast has hit the market, presenting an opportunity for investors to own a slice of Australian paradise that offers complete seclusion.

Ninth Island is a 16-hectare landholding that sits about 12 kilometres from Bridport and is accessible via boat or helicopter. While Ninth Island is currently uninhabited, it is home to an abundance of wildlife, including penguins, seals, and birds, and offers immense potential for small-scale ecotourism or a private retreat.

The island has previously been used for cattle, but eco-tourism investors are showing interest.

Yong Real Estate chief executive Peter Huang, who is handling the sale, says the island’s freehold status is exceptionally rare.

“Among Tasmania’s 5000 islands, only about a dozen are freehold, and this is one of them,” he says.

“It’s a once-in-a-lifetime chance to own a property of this kind. This would suit a tourism operator or a high-net-worth individual looking for something truly unique.

“It could become an off-grid luxury getaway or sustainable eco-retreat that celebrates the natural environment.”

The island is well-known in the region, and even has a wine named after it. When Dr Andrew Pirie founded Pipers Brook Vineyard in the 1970s, he was inspired by the maritime climate and its influence on grape growing. The island became a symbol of that environment, thanks to its remoteness and exposure to cool sea breezes. These conditions perfectly mirrored the conditions shaping their wines, so Ninth Island wines were born.

Wildlife is abundant on Ninth Island, with penguins, seals and birdlife calling it home.

The history of Ninth Island doesn’t stop there; it was also the refuge for the survivors of a shipwreck, including Princess Mary of Denmark’s grandfather.

Since then, the island has been used for cattle farming, which demonstrates its fertile capability.

“Its agricultural past speaks to the purity of the environment,” Huang says. “The air, water and land quality here are exceptional.”

Once you get to Bridport by boat, it’s just an hour’s drive to Launceston Airport.

With sweeping coastal views and proximity to some of Tasmania’s premier tourism attractions, Ninth Island offers a rare investment opportunity for someone with vision and a love of rugged Australian landscape.

“For the right buyer, this could be both a lifestyle retreat and a visionary business venture in Tasmania’s growing ecotourism sector,” Huang says.

Offers for Ninth Island are being invited for over $1.9 million plus GST.
