A Parramatta development which will house much of the NSW Department of Education on its completion in two years has been approved.

DEXUS will commence construction on a 25,000-square-metre A-grade office building at 105 Phillip Street set to be home to 1800 department employees from March 2018, after being given the go-ahead by the Sydney West Joint Regional Planning Panel .

The site has been designed in collaboration with the department and will incorporate floor plates ranging from 2160 square metres to 2500 square metres, connected by stairs.

The building will have a roof terrace, an outdoor dining area, sports court and end-of-trip facilities. It will incorporate a link between Philip and George streets and also target a five-star NABERS energy rating.

DEXUS group general manager, development, Paul Oates said the project would contribute to the new vision of Parramatta as Sydney’s second CBD.

“Our development strongly supports Parramatta’s growth as a place to invest and to do business, while delivering a world-class, fit-for-purpose office space for Department of Education staff,” Mr Oates said.

City of Parramatta administrator Amanda Chadwick hailed the relocation of the department to Parramatta as a significant employment boost to the region.

“The Department of Education joins a growing list of government and corporate organisations relocating to the Parramatta CBD, which is already the fifth largest office centre with the lowest vacancy rate of A-grade commercial floor space in Australia at just 1.7 per cent,” Ms Chadwick said.

“We expect quality tenants to continue to relocate to Parramatta, attracted by the city’s dynamic workforce, interconnected transport options and vibrant lifestyle offerings.”
