Snowy Mountains property with ties to Queen Elizabeth II hits the market
Several properties in the Snowy Mountains township of Khancoban have been listed for sale via expressions of interest, including one famously visited by Queen Elizabeth II.
The property, which has been dubbed the “Queen’s Cottage”, is a character-filled set of residences on Pendergast Street that once hosted the late Queen Elizabeth II during her 1963 royal tour.
The portfolio, built in 1961 by the Snowy Mountains Authority, includes seven units ready for immediate occupation, two two-bedroom cabins, and a luxurious owners’ residence on a large 2.23-hectare parcel of land. Buyers can choose to purchase one property or all four together.
“It’s very impressive that royalty has visited this property,” says Rod Devlin of CRE Brokers.
“Queen Elizabeth visited Khancoban in 1963 to inspect the construction of the Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Scheme during her royal tour. She and Prince Philip toured the Geehi Tunnel construction site to see the progress of this major engineering project, which was central to the area’s activity at the time.”
That royal connection has continued to resonate with prospective buyers.
“The property has had immediate appeal based on its link to the royals and also its location and facilities,” Devlin explains.
“It provides both a luxurious lifestyle and a strong business opportunity.”
The offering presents investors with flexibility and multiple income streams. Each of the three holiday homes currently attracts steady bookings from fishing groups, holidaymakers and contractors working on nearby government infrastructure projects, while The Queen’s Cottage offers a more premium accommodation experience that celebrates its prestige and mountain setting.
Khancoban itself was built to house workers constructing the Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Scheme, which was one of Australia’s great post-war engineering feats. Today, the town has evolved into a peaceful alpine village beloved by nature enthusiasts and adventurers.
“Khancoban is a charming village in the high country. The Khancoban Pondage is part of the Scheme – a three-kilometre-long lake that’s become a playground for adventure and photography. In the warmer months, swimming, kayaking, waterskiing and wakeboarding are all popular, while fishermen utilise the lake all year round,” says Devin.
The surrounding landscape makes it an ideal base for guests exploring the Snowy Mountains or travelling to Thredbo, a highly popular skiing village, and Perisher.
“The view over the water is beautiful, especially in autumn when the leaves turn the landscape into a riot of colour,” Devlin adds.
“There’s even an excellent airstrip nearby, giving easy access to purchasers with pilot licences and small planes.”
