From post office to prime investment: Iconic Mittagong property hits the market
Built in 1890, 5-9 Station Street has seen a lot of change throughout the years. It first served the NSW Southern Highlands town of Mittagong as a post office until 1964, then as a grand residential home, and, more recently, Collette Dinnigan placed her homewares store on the ground floor.
Now offered for sale, there’s no doubt it will continue to adapt to its environment for years to come.
The site in the popular tourist town comprises the heritage-listed former post office at number 5 and a separately titled and tenanted shop/office at number 9.
The former post office is set on 659 square metres and is widely regarded as one of Mittagong’s most recognisable historic buildings. The grand Victorian building retains most of its original details, from its French-door entry and arched corrugated-iron ceilings to soaring 12-foot ceilings, timber floors, and deep skirting boards throughout. Internally, the building comprises nine generous and flexible rooms, formal reception spaces, a wide central hallway and lobby, and a striking cedar staircase.

Period fireplaces with marble mantels, hydronic heating, a kitchen, a laundry with internal access, and two bathrooms further enhance its adaptability, while a side portico and deck, rear lane access, secure off-street parking, and an established fenced garden, complete with the original well, complete the package.
The property also benefits from an approved development application for a boutique hotel and cafe.
Complementing the heritage building is 9 Station Street, a separately titled commercial retail/office asset on 265 square metres, currently leased to a massage therapist and providing immediate holding income. The building comprises four individual offices, a reception area, a kitchen and toilet facilities, and is fitted with ducted reverse-cycle air-conditioning.
Secure parking for six vehicles, accessed via Wards Lane, supports its ongoing commercial use, while an existing DA approval for mixed-use development offers future flexibility.

The properties are positioned on a leafy, tree-lined street adjacent to the Mittagong train station, and Station Street sits at the centre of Mittagong’s commercial and social activity, benefitting from rail connectivity, foot traffic and the town’s growing reputation as a Southern Highlands hub.
Selling agent Lisa-Marie Cauchois, sales manager at Drew Lindsay Sotheby’s International Realty, says buyer interest has exceeded expectations.
“Interest has been stronger than anticipated for a commercial opportunity, but it’s the history and unique offering that has sparked interest across a very broad audience,” she says.

“The Old Post Office has really been the star of this offering. I believe the buyer will create something very special there, and the shop at number 9 can help fund that project.”
Opportunities like this are increasingly scarce, particularly in established regional centres.
“You have a historic building full of charm and character, an existing DA, plus an additional shop that is tenanted,” Cauchois says. “You may get one or two of those elements in a listing, but it’s very rare to see all three together.”
