Albury’s iconic Ettamogah Pub hits market for $7.5m

The iconic cartoon-inspired Ettamogah Pub is back on the market, with an asking price of $7.5 million.

Famous for the vintage truck on its bright red roof, the pub occupies a 4.81-hectare site at 561 Burma Road, Table Top, just north of NSW’s Albury on the Hume Highway.

Built in 1987 as a tourist attraction, the Ettamogah Pub was inspired by a long-running magazine cartoon sketched by the late Ken Maynard, apparently named after an Indigenous word for “place of good drink”.

The Freehold Going Concern is on offer with listing agents Savills noting investment highlights include the original pub, a dining barn, retail shops, a large recreational oval and camping facilities with redevelopment potential (STCA).

“The owner is focusing on selling the hotel and he’s probably seeking interest of seven and a half million dollars,” says listing agent Leon Alaban, managing director, pubs and accommodation, hotels and hospitality – Brisbane at Savills.

The property listing notes that the pub is “one of Australia’s most recognisable hospitality landmarks” and it comes with “novelty appeal, loyal customers and high visibility supporting revenue across food, beverage, retail and accommodation.”

The photogenic two-story pub – with nine bar taps –  was originally brought to market at the end of last year with the inclusion of all intellectual property. However, on offer now is strictly the hotel only.

Maynard first sketched his concept of the pub in 1959, and the former police officer’s work was regularly published in Australia’s longest-running weekly picture magazine, The Australasian Post – also known as the Aussie Post – from the 1960s until it ceased publication in 2002.

Inspired by the series, businessman Lindsay Cooper built the replica pub in 1987.

A decade later, the retiring owner, Leigh O’Brien, purchased it and spent the next 30 years switching between operational models.

The hotel has been replicated interstate with Ettamogah Hotels opening on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast, at Kellyville Ridge in NSW and in Cunderin in Western Australia.
