Caption by Hyatt brings new kind of social energy to Sydney’s hotel scene

Sydney’s newest hotel, Caption by Hyatt, has replaced the traditional lobby with a social hub designed to connect people with the neighbourhood culture.

The hotel in Haymarket, which opened its doors on October 13, marks the Australian debut of Hyatt’s next-generation lifestyle brand. The 174-room hotel blends community-first hospitality with tech-enabled convenience and locally inspired design, but its true talking point is Talk Shop, an all-day cafe, bar and community hub redefining how guests and locals interact.

Caption by Hyatt boasts 174 rooms in the heart of Haymarket.

“At the heart of Caption by Hyatt Central Sydney is Talk Shop, our cafe, bar, and community space all in one,” says Temara Exton, general manager of Caption by Hyatt Central Sydney.

“It’s designed to blur the lines between hotel and neighbourhood, where travellers, students, and locals can come together over great food, coffee, or cocktails. We’ve created an environment that feels welcoming and unpretentious, whether you’re checking emails over breakfast, grabbing a quick lunch, or winding down in the evening.”

Throughout the day, Talk Shop transforms effortlessly from a bright, laid-back workspace for guests and visitors to a lively local hangout serving cocktails and bites to eat. It’s playful – healthy versus indulgent – “Burgers & Bowls” menu by Chef Yammi Cheung champions Sydney’s multicultural flavour. The venue’s QR-based ordering keeps things modern and convenient.

The Talk Shop is a place to bring community together.

Exton says the concept reflects a broader shift in how people travel and live.

“The Caption brand was built around the idea of community-first hospitality,” she explains.

“Travellers today are looking for connection, not just accommodation. They want spaces that feel authentic, local and flexible, where they can meet people, work, eat, or simply relax without boundaries. By integrating Talk Shop into the hotel’s design, Hyatt is rethinking how a hotel can function. It’s no longer just a place to stay, it’s a place to connect and experience the neighbourhood.”

The design of the hotel and The Talk Shop was created by Mitchell & Eades. The interiors employ recycled and upcycled materials, complemented by art from Sydney illustrator Chris Yee, Melbourne creative Samy Baby, and Japanese-Australian artist Hiromi Tango.

Talk Shop’s menu reflects Sydney’s multicultural energy, all served in a relaxed, social dining setting with QR-based ordering for convenience.

“The Talk Shop social hub gives Hyatt a distinctive edge because it’s not formulaic – it’s hyper-local and adaptive,” Exton adds.

“In Sydney, that means embracing the character and energy of Central Sydney and Haymarket. It’s casual but considered, design-led but approachable. That balance between global standards and local spirit is what sets Caption by Hyatt apart.”
