Australia's most outstanding concrete public architectural works

Sydney’s Punchbowl Mosque and the Melbourne University Carpark are among Australia’s top 10 most outstanding concrete public architectural works, revealed during the 90th anniversary of the peak body for heavy construction materials, Cement Concrete & Aggregates Australia.

The other eight are the Australian Academy of Sciences’ Shine Dome in Canberra, Australia Square in Sydney, the Gladesville Bridge in Sydney, James Cook University Library in Townsville, the Victorian State Offices, Brisbane’s Queensland Art Gallery, the High Court building in Canberra and the Sydney Opera House.

An architectural panel chaired by former NSW government architect and current Central City District Commissioner for the Greater Sydney Commission, Peter Poulet, selected the 10 from a list of 45 nominations based on architectural merit, innovation in the use of concrete and exemplar of time.

In particular, Mr Poulet praised the brutalist architectural style of the late 1960s in the James Cook University Library, the poetic pragmatism of the Melbourne University Car Park and the manipulation of light in the design of the Punchbowl Mosque.

Other members of the judging panel include the Victorian Government Architect Jill Garner, the Queensland Government Architect Malcolm Middleton, C+A editor Joe Rollo, Arch Media editor Katelin Butler, University of Queensland Dean of Architecture Cameron Bruhn, Barangaroo design director Bob Champion and ARUP engineer Peter Bowtell.
