Four properties evoking the Bronte world's Gothic style

4 properties that embody Wuthering Heights' iconic Gothic style

With the teaser trailer for Emerald Fennell’s new Wuthering Heights adaptation now out, starring Aussie actors Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi, the Gothic style synonymous with the Bronte sisters’ world is in the spotlight. Dark, moody properties located in the isolated moors of England, where the supernatural lurks, are the setting for not only Wuthering Heights, but also other Bronte classics, including Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte.

If you’re an investor who loves a touch of drama, here are four commercial properties across Australia that echo the moody grandeur of Thrushcross Grange, where the torturous love between Heathcliff and Catherine Earnshaw takes centre stage.

34–36 Paterson Street, Launceston

In the heart of Launceston’s CBD,  a rare offering of three distinct buildings is turning heads. The Gothic-style church, which was built circa 1868, in particular has an air of Wuthering Heights mystery. The commanding frontage showcases a solid and enduring design, while inside, the soaring gabled ceilings and stained-glass windows embody the distinctive Gothic revival design of the time. Strategically zoned Urban Mixed Use, the property comprises a land area of approximately 2673 square metres across seven titles and can be developed into an exciting new city centre precinct with council approval.

5a Frederick Street, Launceston

Unsurprisingly, Launceston is home to more than one Gothic gem. Tucked just off the main thoroughfare is The Chalmers Church, a Gothic Revival church built in 1859. It was named after Thomas Chalmers, the founder of the Free Church movement in Scotland following the 1843 Great Disruption of the Church of Scotland. His followers were known as Free Kirkers. The church became a Presbyterian church in 1896 and was deconsecrated in 1981.

The building’s high-ceilinged interiors and period detailing offer a canvas for businesses seeking individuality. It’s easy to imagine the church becoming a gallery, wine bar or event space. It’s currently being used as a modern workspace for Tasmanian Walking Company, where original details are celebrated, including the weathered timber doors and exposed brick.

It’s the kind of haunt where whispered conversations and flickering candlelight bring an edge of intrigue.

55 Maud Street, Geelong

Geelong’s Maud Street property, formerly the Geelong Grammar School, was built in 1857 and offers four levels of accommodation-style rooms, located within walking distance to the Geelong CBD, the waterfront, GMHBA Stadium, and South Geelong train station.

The iconic Gothic Tudor-style building features 28 rooms, as well as multiple commercial kitchens, recreational areas, and well-manicured gardens, which are ideal for meeting with banished lovers without anyone knowing.

3 Little Queen Street, Chippendale, NSW

Chippendale has earned a reputation as Sydney’s creative heart, and this property fits into the setting perfectly. Once operating as a bar, 3 Little Queen Street boasts Gothic charm in a modern business district, featuring exposed brickwork, pitched ceilings that let in natural light, and a tucked-away setting.

The large 200-square-metre layout spans across two levels and can accommodate 1520 staff, plus room for gatherings, demonstrating its ability to serve a variety of business operators seeking to lease a space with character.
