Castle Mountain (also known as Castle Mountain Farmstay) is a 2000 acre [850 hectare] property on the North-West Slopes of New South Wales. The property is so named because the mountain, "Castle Mountain", is located in the centre of the property and when viewed from the west the 70 metre escarpment gives the appearance of a castle on top of the mountain.
Castle Mountain is the highest point; 757 metres, in the triangle formed by the towns of Quirindi, Wallabadah and Willow Tree, and is recorded on most good maps.
We are offering for sale the homestead block, title No 417127, of 300 acres plus lot 258 700 acres a total of 1000acres along with all buildings; the homestead, a small cottage, two stand-alone bedroom-units serviced by an amenities block, a powerhouse, garage/workshop, carport, dairy/stable, two man saw mill and steel cattle yards.
Two other lots adjoining, all with building entitlements, are also for sale being Lot 66, 500 acres - $330K; and Lot 67, 500 acres - $300K. Access to lots 66 and 67 is from the Quirindi/Willow Tree road. They both have escarpments overlooking the Liverpool Plains. Lot 66 contains the Quirindi Trig known as Castle Mountain and is the highest point in the district. We have lived here for 30 years and built our own solar-powered homestead from cypress pine and bush rock accessed on the property.
We initially ran medium/fine wool merino sheep and beef cattle. Through being a host farm for
WWOOFers (Willing Workers on Organic Farms) we were introduced to the international backpacker market and opened our home and property as a farmstay. We operated this for 12 years providing budget accommodation with home-cooked meals, a comfortable bed and a real Aussie experience including horse riding, milking a cow, collecting eggs, feeding animals, spotlighting native animals, bushwalking, barbeques and playing with a pet kangaroo and emu. With our son, trained in cliff rescue and abseiling, we also introduced rock climbing and abseiling on the property to the list of activities. Being budget orientated we also attracted Australian families giving children an opportunity to experience country life and close contact with animals. This also gave guests the opportunity to experience living in a sustainable environment with all power being supplied by solar, water collected on the farm and the homestead being built from renewable materials.
This experience was further promoted to the domestic market by a visit from the travel TV program Getaway. We also catered for group camps of artists, writers, mountain bikers, bird watches and church groups. This led to day visits by groups coming by coach for lunch, trail-rides for horse enthusiasts, wedding and birthday celebrations, family reunions and vintage car and four wheel drive gatherings.
Castle Mountain has an abundance of native birds and animals and a variety of native flora. The homestead and a number of the out-buildings have been built with timber from the native cypress-pine forest on Castle Mountain where there is a large quantity of this valued building timber along with other native hardwoods.
The homestead is a solid, practical home with lots of rustic charm ideal for bringing up a family or any number of other uses. It could be run as an outdoor business venture for individuals, or a syndicate-owned property catering for private adventures, or as a corporate training venue for personal development.
Castle Mountain is centrally located to many of the famous NSW tourist attractions being under an hour from Tamworth, the Country Music Capital of Australia and home to AELEC (Australian Equine and Livestock Events Centre) and a similar distance to Scone, the Horse Capital of Australia. There are also three major water storage dams catering for fishing and water sports close by. Barrington National Park is to the southeast and the vast thoroughbred horse and wine growing industries of the Hunter Valley to the south; Warrumbungle National Park, Western Plains Zoo and Coonabarabran Siding Springs Observatory to the west; Nandewar National Park and Moree Artesian hot baths to the north-west; and the Wild Rivers National Park and Waterfall Way east of the university city of Armidale to the north. As well, it is in the centre of one of the most productive beef cattle, sheep and cropping districts in Australia.
As well as being featured on Getaway the homestead was front cover of The Owner Builder magazine Aug/Sep 2014 edition and was open for National Sustainable House Day in 2015 and 2016.
