Six summer businesses you can buy right now
Over the long, hot Australian summer many businesses close down, but for some the beating sun signals their time to shine.
After all, those on vacation need to find ways to feed and entertain themselves during the break – as well as somewhere to stay – and a business that manages to crack that market could prove a handy investment.
Here are six businesses on the market now that come into their own in summer.
Coffs Harbour, NSW
It’s rare for accommodation to pop up for sale on NSW’s North Coast and when it does it is usually pounced on quickly.
The owners of a motel in Coffs Harbour – located directly across the road from patrolled surf beaches – are offering a five-year lease and seeking offers of more than $120,000.
The business has turned a net profit of $86,489 for 2018/19 according to the listing, with forward bookings for a variety of events already in place.
Currently consisting of 12 self-contained units the 3.5-star property includes facilities such as a large saltwater pool, barbecue area and a kids playground surrounded by tropical gardens.
Airlie Beach, Queensland
Look out to the iconic Whitsundays while you serve flat whites and pastries from this cafe in the tourist haven.
On the market for $150,000 and offered on a walk-in-walk-out basis, the Wisdom Cafe is located in a prime position just opposite the beachfront.
In operation for more than 20 years, the cafe features a contemporary interior and seating for 33. The town is considered a gateway to the Whitsunday islands and the Great Barrier Reef and is popular with tourists making their way up the Queensland coast.
Broadbeach, Queensland
A surf shop in summer is the quintessential Aussie business, particularly when it’s on the Gold Coast – the perennial favourite of holidaymakers from near and afar.
On offer is a store that has been operating for 24 years in the same location, selling clothing and boards from major surf and skate brands.
The owner, who is looking to retire, is asking $130,000, plus stock.
According to the listing the shop reports an average turnover of $750,000 a year.
Baird Bay, South Australia
This eco lodge and boat-tour business is located on a 20-kilometre stretch of beach at Baird Bay on the Eyre Peninsula.
It has five beachfront holiday homes on the title, each with full kitchen facilities, lawns and access to a shared change room, kayaks and boat with outboard motor.
The other part of the business is the NeoPhocus charter boat which has a capacity for 15 people and takes two daily boat tours of the bay, where tourists swim with the sea lions and Bottlenose Dolphins.
It’s on the market for $2.25 million as a freehold offering.
Hobart, Tasmania
Summer is usually a bumper time for galleries and their gift shops, and the Strickland Gallery, in the Hotel Grand Chancellor on Hobart’s waterfront, no exception.
The business has recently been re-advertised with its price reduced to $67,000, including stock (but not the artwork, which is sold on consignment).
The gallery has been running for 25 years and shows up-and-coming artists as well as some of Tasmania’s most established and awarded artists.
The works of 16 artists are currently being exhibited seven days a week.
Byron Bay, NSW
The management rights for this holiday complex in the beautiful northern NSW town of Byron Bay are on the market for $1,198,000. The listing states that the business would be an ideal starter investment for those looking to enter the hospitality industry, with the property easily managed by one person or a couple.
The deal includes management rights for the one-bedroom holiday units as well as the use of a two-bedroom manager’s residence which is currently being rented out.
With Byron Bay rising through the ranks to become one of Australia’s most internationally recognisable holiday destinations, you are likely to be never short of guests.
