Singapore-based Fullerton Hotel has thrown open its doors for business in Sydney’s Martin Place after the brand took over the operations of the former Westin Hotel group.
It is the first time for the operator in Australia and it has chosen the iconic former GPO building at No.1 Martin Place, in the core of the Sydney central business district, to launch itself.
Fullerton is a five-star brand and has been looking to expand into Australia for some time. It holds a prime position in Singapore, overlooking the Marina Bay precinct.
There are expectations the existing retail and bar areas in the GPO site will be reviewed over time.
The arrival comes as the Sydney hotel market is undergoing change, with the arrival of other new brands and developments.
The Ritz-Carlton will return to the country after a long hiatus, with the opening of a site in Perth next month. The operator has also ear-marked Pyrmont as a site adjoining The Star casino, but that remains in the hands of the NSW Planning department.
There has been a suggestion, from sources close to the deal who declined to comment, that the Ritz-Carlton has identified a proposed development at 4-6 Bligh Street for another hotel.
The opening comes as the research group STR says Sydney reported a rise in supply of 1.6 per cent, year-on-year to September, with a drop in average occupancy by 3.5 per cent to 79.6 per cent.
STR says revenue per available room (RevPAR) fell 6.1 per cent to $163.60.
“The absolute occupancy would be the lowest for a September in Sydney since 2009, and RevPAR has now declined year over year in the market for 18 consecutive months. STR analysts note that overall performance has been affected by steady supply outpacing demand,” the group said.
Despite the marginal decline in the demand data, TFE Hotel group has also pushed the expansion button, opening the Vibe Darling Harbour, according to the new new chief executive Antony Ritch.
TFE Hotels is in the midst of a strong expansion with more than 26 hotels in the pipeline, including contemporary new properties.
TFE Hotels Collection, Adina Hotels, Travelodge Hotels and Vibe Hotels are all fast gaining momentum in Australia and New Zealand, while TFE’s Adina Hotels brand is expanding rapidly in Europe.
Mr Ritch announced last week that the flagship Adina Hotels brand will debut in Austria in 2020 and in Switzerland in 2022.
He said the Australian-based international hotel company was entering a period of “strong growth with the launch of more than 26 hotels, across six brands and five countries, over the next four years”.
“In recent years, we have invested extensively in increasing the experience, livability and design of our Adina Hotels,” Mr Ritch said.
“In the coming years, our guests can expect to see cutting-edge design and beautiful showpiece hotels opening across continental Europe, including Vienna and Geneva as well as Cologne, Dusseldorf, Freiburg, Munich, Stuttgart and Wiesbaden.”
