Head up Sydney Road from the City and you will find the Spotted Mallard up on the right. Welcome to the prettiest live music venue in Melbourne. The stage at the Spotted Mallard is the crowning glory of a grand space with bright parquet floors that was formerly used as a ballroom. Now, lampshades and a mirror ball hang down from a high ceiling with a stained-glass skylight at its heart. It's here hipsters, urban cowboys and old ducks come for toe-tapping folk and swing bands, surf rock and even some cabaret acts. But what makes the place tick over is that the entertainment isn't left to fend for itself with the support of the large commercial kitchen.
The venue has raised areas that almost give it an amphitheatre feel so that all can see what is happening on the stage. One large bar serves the entire venue with associated cool rooms and storage downstairs underneath. The raised section on Sydney Road end of the venue opens out on to a balcony for smokers and those needing some fresh air. In addition to this the venue has footpath trading. The opposite end of the venue has a mezzanine level above the open plan kitchen that is mainly used by the bands as a "Green Room". A recent addition to Spotted Mallard is the small bar downstairs tucked away from all the music that has its own entrance and ambience and has a separate lease running concurrently with the main one and rent being $550 a week including GST.
The venue has an On Premises licence until 1 am with a large capacity of 293 and no security restrictions.
