The Shaw Davey Slum, aka 'The Slum' resides in Carlton's Elgin Street located just off Lygon St. But it's hardly a slum with gold plated cricket stump beer taps, hand made concrete bar tops embedded with 24 carat gold & silver leaf on the ground floor and seashells on the top floor. The clientele ranges from students and local residents of Carlton to corporates, depending on the day and time, with the venue being at capacity on many occasions.
There is footpath trading either side of the venue and as you head inside the first thing you'll notice about is the imaginative interior design. The lower level comprises three large areas for dining and socialising. There is plenty of bar space as there needs to be to fit the eighteen beer lines from the glycol system in the cellar. Behind the bar is a large newly equipped commercial kitchen.
Upstairs there are two large areas that can be used as function spaces or just as one large level, which are dominated by a stunning retractable roof to let in the rays providing a beer garden when warm, and covered dining area when chilly. Again supported by another large bar and both levels have their own toilets. Upstairs there is also a staff room and office.
It is a long lease of 21 years made up of 5+8+8 with rent of $3250 a week. The venue has a general licence, on premises till 1am and off premises till 11pm. There is not enough space here to describe all that is in the Shaw Davey Slum and so it really needs to be seen.
