With 3 titles and a total area of 739.8 acres (299.4 ha), the Little Swanport Private Nature Reserve (LSPNR) has conservation covenants established in 2001 under the Private Forest Reserves Programme for the 7 old growth forest communities of high conservation value. Private Nature Reserve status was declared in 2005.
The covenants provide for an area of 1.5 ha on each title for purposes of building or occupation without any restrictions except those applied by Council. Most of the white peppermint forests on the plateaus that were selectively logged around 50 years ago have no conservation status and provide good scope for establishing human habitation sites which are currently undefined. Old logging tracks throughout the area allow for relatively easy access to some remote spots.
While the prime objective of the covenants is to protect the rare forests, there remains plenty of scope for social, economic and environmental activities such as seed collecting, bird watching, mountain biking, photography, eco-tourism, spiritual or health retreat, and trout fishing in Pepper Creek and Deep Hole.
The LSPNR has 3km frontage to Swanston Road and is only accessible by 4WD vehicle from the east coast and from the west. It also has a 3km frontage to the Little Swanport River. The townships of Swansea and Triabunna are around 30 minutes away to the north and south respectively. Oatlands and Buckland are 1.5 hours away to the west.
